There’s something interesting about seeing yourself on the cover of a magazine at 51.
You notice the photograph.
You feel grateful.
You think about everyone who helped make it happen.

And then, if you’re me, you start thinking about the woman in the photograph.
Not simply how she looks.
What it took for her to get there.
This month, I had the honor of being featured in So Scottsdale! in a story called “Taking Up Space.”
And I keep coming back to those three words.
Because this season of my life feels like exactly that.
Not taking up space for the sake of simply being seen.
Taking up the space my life has prepared me for.

Experience Is an Asset
By 51, I’ve lived enough life to know I don’t have all the answers.
But I do have experience.
I’ve built things.
Changed directions.
Made mistakes.
Survived a heart attack.
Walked through seasons that changed what I value and what I’m willing to spend my time on.
And I don’t see any of that as baggage I need to overcome before I can begin something new.
I see it as what I’m beginning with.
There’s a strange idea women in midlife can absorb as we get older — that our biggest swings should already be behind us.
That experience makes us wiser, certainly… but perhaps a little less bold.
A little more reasonable.
A little more willing to stay where we’ve already proven ourselves.
I’m finding the opposite to be true.
The woman I am now has something the younger versions of me didn’t:
Perspective.
And perspective is one hell of a thing to build from.
I’m Not Interested in Becoming Less Visible
Taking up space can sound like a declaration.
For me, it feels more like a decision.
To stop shrinking an idea before I’ve given it room to become something.
To stop assuming there’s an age by which I should have arrived.
To let myself want something new without needing to apologize for already having a beautiful life.
And to trust that everything I’ve lived has earned a place in whatever I build next.
Maybe that’s what midlife reinvention really looks like — not erasing the woman you’ve been, but building from everything she knows.
For me, that includes The Catherine Tuton Show.
I said in the So Scottsdale! feature that launching this show has felt a little like the birthing of my baby — scary and exhilarating.
The show makes her debut October 26.

And as that date gets closer, I’m realizing how much this project represents the season I’m in.
I’m using my voice differently.
I’m sitting across from extraordinary people and asking the questions I genuinely want answered.
I’m building something with my name on it.
And I’m allowing myself to be seen doing it.

I Want Proof, Not Perfection
One of the things I want most from the conversations I’m having on the show is proof.
Not another perfectly packaged version of someone’s success.
Proof that people can live through difficult things and still create beautiful lives.
That you can change your mind.
Take the risk.
Begin later.
Want something different.
Become more yourself instead of less.
I want more women over 50 to see that kind of proof — and to see experience as an advantage, not evidence that their boldest years are behind them.
Because sometimes inspiration can feel far away.
Someone else’s beautiful story.
Someone else’s brave choice.
Someone else’s life.
But when you hear the whole story — the mistakes, the pivots, the unexpected chapters, the years it took to understand what any of it meant — possibility starts looking a lot more like proof.
She did it.
She survived it.
She changed.
She began again.
Maybe I can, too.
Maybe It’s Your Turn to Take Up More Space
I don’t think taking up space has to mean becoming louder.
Sometimes it simply means disappearing less from your own life.
Putting your name on the idea.
Wearing the thing.
Booking the trip.
Starting the project.
Having the conversation.
Letting yourself be photographed.
Saying yes before you have every detail figured out.
At 51, I’m not interested in making my life smaller so it fits an outdated idea of who a woman is supposed to become at this age.
I’m interested in finding out what all this experience makes possible.
And if you’re somewhere in the middle of your own next chapter, I hope you’ll consider doing the same.
You’ve lived too much life to start shrinking now.
Take up some space.
You can start by following The Catherine Tuton Show and joining me for the conversations ahead.
xo, 💋
Catherine
