The Southern Girl’s Guide to Traveling Boldly (and a Little UNproperly)

I'm

CATHERINE

Think of me as the martini-pouring truth-teller who blends Southern charm with New York edge—mixing grit, glam, and unapologetic real talk to build a front-row world where women rise.

Because life is too short for small talk, safe choices, and basic itineraries.

Let’s get one thing straight: Southern women were born to travel boldly.

We’ve spent our whole lives navigating unsolicited advice, family expectations, the pressure to “be nice,” and the art of slipping out of a room gracefully while holding a casserole, a compliment, and a boundary that we pretend is “just a suggestion.”

So when you finally give a Southern girl a suitcase and a runway?
Baby, she is unstoppable.

And UNproper.
Very, very UNproper.

Travel Isn’t Just Movement — It’s Permission

For me, travel has never been about collecting passport stamps like trophies. It’s about permission… the rare, glorious permission to step outside the version of myself the world decided I should be and slip into the woman I actually am.

The curious one.
The brave one.
The one who books the ticket even if nobody can go with her.
The one who chooses the boutique hotel because it feels like a love letter to her future self.
The one who walks through an airport with sunglasses on like she’s the opening scene of a movie.

It whispers:
“You can be more than the polished version of yourself. You can be loud. Or soft. Or undone. Or divine. Or all of the above on the same day.”

That’s why I travel boldly.
And unapologetically.

Rule #1: Don’t Pack Light — Pack Intentionally

I don’t care what the travel blogs say.

Southern women do not pack light.
We pack right.

We pack options, because we honor the truth that moods shift, weather lies, and a moment might call for dramatic sleeves or a plunging neckline.
We pack the good perfume because we understand that scent is a story.
We pack earrings that say, “I’m here to be seen, not to blend in.”

Your suitcase is not a burden.

It’s a portable, rolling version of your personal brand.

Let it take up space.

Rule #2: Eat the Damn Thing

Some people travel to “stay on track.”

I travel to experience life in high definition.

So yes, I’m going to eat the thing — the pastry, the steak, the chocolate, the street food that looks questionably delicious, the gelato that requires zero justification.

Food is culture.
Food is connection.
Food is storytelling.

And Southern girls have always known that the best conversations happen over something warm, messy, and entirely worth the calories.

Rule #3: Don’t Be a Tourist — Be a Human

Take the photos, absolutely. (Your future self will thank you.)

But also:

Sit. Watch. Listen.
Smile at strangers.
Ask questions.
Say thank you in the native language, even if you butcher it with your Southern drawl.
Find the local café where the old men play cards and the barista already knows who’s about to ask for a second espresso.

Travel boldly by allowing yourself to belong, even temporarily, to a story that isn’t yours.

Rule #4: Let the Trip Change You

Bold travel isn’t about checking off landmarks — it’s about letting the world leave fingerprints on your soul.

I’ve returned home from trips softer.
I’ve returned fiercer.
I’ve returned with clarity.
I’ve returned with a brand-new chapter ready to be written.

That is the magic of choosing to live UNproperly.
You let life rearrange you in all the right ways.

Rule #5: Bring Your Real Self With You

Travel has a way of shaking loose the truth.

And here’s mine:
I am a Southern woman who loves an adventure, a meaningful conversation with a stranger at a bar, an ocean view that makes me cry, and a late-night reflection moment in a hotel bathroom where I remind myself that I have survived things far greater than turbulence.

I show up real — imperfect, spontaneous, curious, emotional, brave.
I show up unfiltered.

And that’s exactly why travel feels like home.

The UNproper Invitation

If you’ve been craving movement — emotional, physical, spiritual — consider this your sign.

Book the damn ticket.
Wear the outfit that feels delicious on your skin.
Order the meal you’ll talk about for years.
Start the conversation with the woman next to you whose energy feels familiar.
Let yourself be seen.
Let yourself be shifted.

Travel boldly.
Live UNproperly.

And don’t forget to pack your big earrings.

Xo,

Catherine
